About the "Preparing to Succeed" Workshop

This practical and engaging workshop uses the latest research from the world of performance psychology combined with the experience of top riders to explore the contributors of success in equestrian competition. The day will be led by Performance Psychology Coach, Charlie Unwin, who has extensive experience working with equestrians from novice to Olympic level.

In this workshop you will discover:

  • Why we tend to overcomplicate things in competition
  • How to use nerves to actually make us more competitive
  • Why performing consistently in competition starts from home
  • How our goals dictate our performance
  • How to use course-walks to become confident and decisive
  • What the best focus for YOU in competition is
    ...PLUS MUCH MORE!

What did other riders think...

"Thanks for an excellent workshop. It is a completely new way of thinking for me but it makes so much sense and I can really see how it is going to help in all aspects of competition, and for that matter, in so many other aspects of life!"
Annalisa Barrelet
Eventer, Suffolk

“Since working with Charlie we have discussed a number of topics surrounding my approach to competition. Realising how planning for events impacts on our mental state was particularly useful. My results have improved for many reasons, but taking control of my own performance and not just the horses’ has played a big part."
Sharon Hunt
Olympic Bronze Medallist, British Eventing Team, Beijing 2008

"Thanks so much for your work on Saturday.  I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and it gave me a deeper understanding of competition control and the value of mental preparation as part of training."
Juliet Bickerton
Eventer, Suffolk

Why is the Workshop Un-Mounted?
The workshop offers a progressive and systematic approach to incorporating performance principles within our current riding programme.  It will therefore not change the way you ride, rather your ability to cope with psychological factors that affect competition performance. To help create lasting benefits, this requires considerable reflection and planning which is best carried out un-mounted.

"Thank you Charlie, I really enjoyed your workshop last Sunday.  I had done similar sessions before, but your ideas have been a revelation.  Of course it is early days yet but now movements have become so much easier to achieve when I concentrate on the things we did - hopefully it will become automatic!"
Claire Kincaid

“I did one of your workshops with a group of Riding Club members last month & did my first competition of the season at Easter w-end. Although only low key riding club level, it was a big thing for me taking my 5 yr old who has not been the easiest to bring on.
We completed two dressage tests & a S-J class which was my first one on him. We won the class & I put it down to the benefits of the workshop & putting into practise what I learnt that day. Thank you.”
Kate Lingwood-White
Gloucestershire

“Following your workshop I went away with the aim of implementing it at our club camp. The flatwork we did was probably some of the best we have ever done, relaxed and soft from both of us and beginning to find advanced moves (for us) a lot easier. Cross Country was amazing and we were jumping really cleanly!!  Show-jumping, sometimes the hardest of the three for me to relax and not rush, but after thinking about the work we did I managed to let the horse get on with the job and jumped beautifully. The really positive thing with this was it was crystal clear to me what to do to correct the situation.

We both had a ball. Please could we fix a date for a second workshop!”
Sam Parsons
Gloucestershire

“Thank you again for a really informative and useful day on Saturday. I put into practice some of the routines in my dressage yesterday at a BE event with my very tense horse. After a disastrous dressage test the week before the workshop, the judge's comments from yesterday's test were as follows:-

“The horse was affected by the tension today but you stayed so focused and calm despite all the resistance she gave you".

I am sure the workshop went a long way towards this - so thank you again.”

Lynne Kitson
Eventer, Gloucestershire
